I had issues with people tailgating. Not always, but most common are large SUV's and monster pickup trucks. I find it funny that some of these vehicles are chromed out with no hitch to pull a boat/trailer. Not that I have any problem with these vehicles, but in a few instances, I knew the drivers were doing it on purpose. I purchased a 3" X 8" bumper sticker online a few months ago that reads, "My OTHER AUTO IS A .45". There have been no issues since. Perhaps it makes he or she think twice about the other driver. Not a bad investment for $3 and the stickers come in black, red, blue and yellow.
I just had an idea today to get an old claymore mine(deactivated, shell only),mount it on the tailgate with the lettering "This side toward enemy" facing the rear with a big red button (like the easy button on the t.v.commercial) marked DETONATOR obviously wired to it so if someone MIGHT hit you, they get nailed. It might make them think twice!
drop the top and throw an ice cube or some other biodegradable item out the top. Back when I smoked, a flaming but out the top ( sun roof ) did the trick. one car I had, I could shoot washer fluid over the top and hit a tailgater with the over sprey.
Anyone else aware of people up on your bumper during the 1-2 shift? Of course it happens early with the smart. I've been thinking caution lamps in the hi mount brake housing like on buses that flash yellow when coasting, or shifting might be a good safety feature, especially in city traffic.
Our city has recently joined the roundabout craze. One of my fun things to do with tailgaters driving much larger vehicles is to enter an empty roundabout at fairly hi speed and "go kart" around it. If people in SUVs tried it, they would likely flip it or lose control on some fashion.
Granted, my solution is only temporary, as after the roundabout they are back within a few blocks. But fun to see how much distance I can gain in fornt of them in the short term.

There is a hitch cover made from a fake claymore, someone already stole your idea ! (or you saw it and forgot you saw it)...

Also great fun on Interstate on and off ramps; run the smart with the flashing yellow triangle and they can't keep up.
