Anyone ever ship a Smart Car in the US?

Getting an idea of what typical shipping costs would be. Thank you.

Someone purchased a smart car from me and I believe it cost them a little less than a $1,000 to ship it from Charleston, WV to Grand Junction, CO. Of course, different trips (miles), type of truck used (covered or not), and the carrier will cause the amount to change. But, $1,000 seems to be a reasonable ball park price.

As my business law professor always said, "What's the right answer?... It depends."

The easiest way to get an idea is either call a transporter or go online for a quote.

When deciding last May how to get my car to my home from Portland, 225 miles, I considered a transporter. I don't remember the exact quote, but it was in the $400-600 ballpark.

When it came to take delivery, I considered driving my Expedition over and trailering home (gas at all-time high prices and 13 MPG), riding Amtrak over ($21) and driving my smart home (the winner), or having it transported. Taking the train and driving home was a wonderful experience.

Cheers,
Timo

I ship cars all the time. Right now I have another Smart coming to me from Anaheim. I would have gone to get it but simply don't have the time.

I've got some good shippers. Try D2DTransport.com for a quote. They are mainly dealer to dealer but I do believe they do public shipping as well.

We have shipped cars from point to point all over the country. Rates change when fuel rises, of course, but rates from California to St. Louis have ranged from $500 to $750. Coast to coast may cost you $1000 or more. Important to tell the carrier that you can wait awhile for a better price if you have that option. That allows him to "tack on" a smart on a trip where there is a room for a smart on his rig. Also allows him to be more competitive. Try JMN in St. Louis (314-843-7478) and also Accelerated Logistics (720-200-3100). Many of these folks are consolidators that work with independents. You may pay a bit more to the consolidator, but they are then responsible for the work of the independent.
