Now the question is, which do you like better?

Here's my wife's '07 MINI Cooper S sitting in the garage next to my smart.

Seriously, there is no comparison. The MINI is a driver's car, the smart is a cute, tiny economy car.

She loves her MINI. She routinely gets 32-35 measured mpg with it. It's turbo-charged, handles like it's on rails, has phenomenal brakes, and it just a hoot to drive.

I did a test drive of the smart in Annapolis MD. Then on the way home, I stopped in Towson MD and drove a base Cooper (was still $22K) You cant really compare them because they are two totally different ideas. The Cooper wasnt bad but for $7K less, I like the uniqueness of the smart

It's a toss up between the MCS or the Smart.
The M3 and the S2k was too high profile.

Its a matter of horses for courses.

I previously owned a Mini Cooper S - 240km/h top speed, 0-100km/h in 6.5 sec, handles like it is on rails while driving on twisty country road, seats 2+2, about 10l/100km. However 95% of my driving is in commuter traffic - 80km/h top speed, 0-100km/h in 6.5 minutes, straight suburban roads, one passenger. Lugging around three empty seats and a ton of ton of extra metal didn't make much sense. Factor in the very expensive tyres and insurance and things looked even dumber.

With cheaper insurance and rego, and much better fuel economy I calculated I'll save around $2,000 a year driving the smart instead of the Mini.

The Mini was great fun for the 5% of the time I could enjoy it, but expensive for the other 95%.

I went from an 03 Mini to the Smart. I miss the handling of the Mini but love the Smart. I would buy another Mini Clubman and am thinking of selling the Smart to get one
