For one thing...

Seat and roofline height: get in and out with somewhat de-lubricated joints... W-40 works for the shifter, not the bones!

we had a really NICE 03 Mini traded in here at work. only 39k miles, green/white with manual trans. seems like a great car and i was actually considering THAT instead of my smart that's due in February.

then i came to my senses.........

I have been researching both cars. The trans problems with the Mini have pretty much turned me off the car. BMW's complete avoidance of the issue is sad.

If you are truly interested in a Mini, spend a couple of hours perusing Mini forums. I did and it cured me quick.

Ditto here. I have an '04 MINI (not S) that has been a great ride for the past 4 years, and my wife is happy to have it to drive around since I usually take the smart. I haven't had any major issues but I do note that the tires are short lived and expensive.

While the smart is more economical, distinctive (in a futuristic way), and perfect as a city car I had no complaints about the MINI.

Have 06 MCS, wife wouldn't give it up for anything, we are awaiting our smart, which will be mostly mine, but she wants to enjoy both. Two different vehicles, both will be lots of fun to own and drive.

Seriously, there is no comparison. The MINI is a driver's car, the smart is a cute, tiny economy car.

She loves her MINI. She routinely gets 32-35 measured mpg with it. It's turbo-charged, handles like it's on rails, has phenomenal brakes, and it just a hoot to drive.
oooh! You ought to get the smart striped out like the coop!

If I could have afford both, I would get both too. I would get the Mini Cooper with a CVT. If I had the finances of Jay Leno, I would have a big garage of little cars.

Mr. Vvrrooom

I totally agree, I had a 2005 red & black Mini CooperS that I traded for the smart car.....two different animals!

I got in speeding trouble with the Mini....I have slower fun with my smart!

Wish I had the money to keep both of them, but I needed better gas mileage and the way I loved to drive the Mini, I was only getting 20-21 MPG! My Insurance was very high (obviously, with my tickets) SOOOO much fun going fast on twisty turn roads!
