I got the upgraded sound system and will say it's sound is decent. I can't say it's as good as I expected for the money, but I have a thing about after-market radios that look after-market. The smart 10 radio certainly looks like it belongs in the smart. When you turn on the ignition, there's even a large smart graphic that pops up on the display. In all, I have two whines about the radio 10 upgrade:

1) there should be two rear speakers
2) there should be an iPod connection (not just a 1/8" jack in the glove box).

I put the bass on +2, leave the treble at 0 and when I turn it up enough, it gives a good balanced bass sound. Both my other vehicles also have sub-woofers from the factory system and both of them rock the bass much more. In my A8 we never turn the bass higher than 0. My wife even sometimes turns it down 1 or 2. I didn't have expectations of the smart system matching the Audi's, but I would have thought the upgraded system would have had rear speakers which I think would improve the sound more than anything else. I wonder if the factory 10 system supports 4 speakers?

My question too ... does anyone know if the Radio 10 supports 4 speakers? I'd love to add a pair in the back. There may be a way of adding another pair to the existing 2-speaker wiring with a separate fader and a resistor to get the correct impedance.

3. remove 2 torx at the door handle
4. remove 1 torx (that holds the panel in place) under the mirror along with it's metal shoulder washer
5. The door skin slides forward and comes free from 3 clips in slots at about 3/4 the way up the panel.
6. pivot the skin down and now back taking great care of the small lip at the door handle section.

Now that the panel is off you can get to the speaker by gently pulling out the foam weather/sound guard.

Note how cheesy factory speakers are!

I unscrewed the speakers and used the Infinity adapters by first screwing the speakers to the adapters from the front of the speaker and then screwing the adapter to the factory studs all using the install kit that came with the speakers. I just cut the wires and soldered the leads to the new speakers but I suppose you could just crimp connectors on.

reinstall the foam and reverse the above steps taking care to get the rubber parts overlapping correctly. The tricky part is getting the front lip of the panel over the front of the door. Once past the front section, pull up on the panel, see that the clips are engaged and the panel is flush and slide back into position.

The first door took me about 25 min with some head scratching. The second took about 10-15.
Yes, thanks for the description - put in some polk audio 6.5" - terrific sound - great sale on the right now at circuit city (less than 90 bucks pair )- kept the tweeters - sounds TERRIFIC.... you're right, the stock speakers weren't much...

Heck, i just noticed the last post was 3 months ago.

I will be tearing into the car this weekend to see what I am gonna do for a subwoofer. I use my car to promote my business and am on the road 2-3 hours a day, so I would really appreciate a nice stereo. The radio 10 is worth $350, though after competing in IASCA 3 times in the 80s & 90s, it is just not gonna keep me happy for long. The system is OK if you are renting the car for a vacation or rarely use the radio, but it looks like I will be selling it VERY soon and upgrading to the system in my truck .

I am not sure about how well DYNAMAT is gonna work in a plastic car, though.

My smart Passion has the premium sound system... and it's surprisingly good, better than my wife's '03 M-B stock system or any stock radio I've ever had. It sounds pretty good with strong bass while parked having a bite during an interstate trip. But there's so much environmental noise in this car on the highway I don't think I could tell the best gear from junk!

My Pure also has the radio 10 and additional sound package. There is a difference in that the radio 10 itself is not that much better than the radio 9. It's the extra sound package that makes the difference. I also turned my bass up and its totally rocks! Yes, I feel like those kids that are always at the lights with the boom boom boom!!!!! I really like it and it is the best radio I have ever had in a car.
