I'm not sure all of us would agree with the "largely free of problems" part of that.
It appears that part supplier production limitations are one reason for long wait for our Smarts !

It doesn't quite say that, but instead that the plant can't produce more then currently produced, and even if it could then parts wouldn't be available to produce the extra smarts.
These cars have been around the rest of the world for some time. Yes I know the 451 series is new but I drove the older Euro versions years ago. I think the real problem is that the "US Specific" parts - such as headlights, Us spec collision bumpers, airbags and the like are probably the bits that are hard to come by in large enough initial quantities to meet the demand. Bet it is less the additional cars produced than the US specific parts that are the real limiting issue.
