sorry future Smart owners, Devon Smart is bad news.
not friendly, no good trade in value, not willing to negotiate a deal, bad interest rates. and to top it off i found out that the exact orphan/ car I have been waiting for (13 months) is on the lot.
I think its time for Smart to re-think their sales strategy. especially in these bad economic times.
oh well.
Yes, well, you see, they still have a 12+ month waiting list because they're selling faster than they can make them. As in, people are still willing to wait that long to get a custom built car. Why would a company drop the price if it doesn't increase their sales?
Interest rates aren't controlled by the manufacturer or dealer. The loan industry determines that. Dealers get a cut, and your local credit union is the cheapest way to go. Trade-ins are the worst way to sell a car... private sale always gets at least $1k more ... because the dealer needs to make a profit.
Now, if they're not friendly... they're not good salespeople and you can go elsewhere. Smart corporate doesn't determine the dealer attitude any more than Honda determines attitude of the Honda dealers. When I went shopping for a brand new Honda in 1992, with cash in hand, the Honda dealership turned up their nose. Toyota was friendly, I blamed Honda and bought the Toyota. I should have bought the Honda.

Everytime I've gone into Devon Smart, I've been welcomed with a smile. Any nicer and they would be annoying! I even stopped there on my way back from picking up my orphan in Edison NJ. They were genuinely happy for me that I found one. (at the time they were loading theirs up with accessories) The one salesman, Seth I believe his name was, actually installed the mats for me that I bought from Edison! So, if you found them to be unfriendly, I have to believe its a reflection on you. They dont control the interest rates and as far as making a deal, its still a sellers market for Smart so if you dont buy it, someone else will. As for waiting 13 months, what exactly do you want on this car thats so unique? I decided I wanted a smart on Oct 1 and found my orphan on Oct 24. Read one of your old posts that says they offered you $8000 less than you owe on your BMW. Again, not their fault your upside down on a car loan.
~ I don't agree with bad customer service but I do agree that you have choices . . .
***** Shop around, some people have traveled hours and many miles to purchase a Smart . . Depending on your location, you have Edison NJ and Cherry Hill NJ to check out . . If the first place doesn't suit you, perhaps the next one will . . You just never know what may happen!
The waiting game and the financing game are enough to make anyone pull their hair out . . . I am certain many people have gone through the same rollercoaster of emotions . . . Hang in there
I saw some guys from Devon at the Philly Car show and they were nice people. There isn't much wiggle room with a smart so I'm not sure what kind of a deal you are looking to get, but smart is one of the few car companies that aren't giving away their cars just to make any sale.

Maybe you should try Mini or Toyota.
Hey Celt
You just picked up a car here, what's your impression of them?
Usually not much of a deal...they just keep all the dealer incentives and factory discounts and mark the trucks up.........by the time your done you really6 haven't gotten much of a bargain. Anyone notice(maybe its just my area) The auto dealers don't seem to be overly willing to deal with buyers ( as far as discounting there pricing) even inm the face of supposed bankruptcy. So Gm and these big auto makers want tax dollar bailout but are unwilling to sell there product at a reduced rate to generate income. Seems to me if the auto industry and banking industry and real estate industries would all be willing to take there licks like everyone else and operate at a reduced profit margin for a while that it would spark the regular consumers to try to make purchases while the getting is good, Thus sparking the economy in general.

I got my car at Cherry Hill and I thought they were great. The only dealings I had with Devon were at the car show and they seemed nice and knowledgeable
I also have to stand up for Devon. Although I purchased my car at Cherry Hill, I've dealt with several Devon people, particularly in service for parts and repairs (don't worry, nothing major, just stuff like getting the new and improved roof shade) and they are incredibly nice and helpful, particularly Margie in service.
