I also have to stand up for Devon. Although I purchased my car at Cherry Hill, I've dealt with several Devon people, particularly in service for parts and repairs (don't worry, nothing major, just stuff like getting the new and improved roof shade) and they are incredibly nice and helpful, particularly Margie in service.
^^ Completely seconded. I live about 15 minutes from Devon, did my test drive and my reservation there, but ended up getting an orphan up in Englewood NJ. I've gone to Devon a couple of times, and they've been fantastically friendly and great on the phone as well as in person.
You have another choice in the Philadelphia area - you can go to CHMB and learn what a really bad sales experience is!! From my experience when our smart was delivered, between the sleazy salesperson and the nasty sales management, I would not buy a rollerskate from those clowns. Told me on phone would accept credit card for $x and remainder by check - amounts suddenly changed and they denied the agreement when I arrived. Then they got nasty and insulting (smart (2nd class) vs. MB buyer). This behavior was consistent with a visit a couple of years ago while shopping for a Mercedes (S-class) - CHMB was the worst to deal with and highest priced in the area. Others have had similar experiences with them.
HOWEVER the Service department at CHMB is like a different dealership - courteous, competent and professional.
Have not been to Devon in person, but have dealt with them by phone (to purchase smart extended warranties, etc) and they have been nothing but friendly, reasonable and customer-focussed.
What were your expectations?
not friendly, - 'friendliness' is subjective - what happened that was 'not friendly'? maybe you caught someone on a busy or bad day - people are people
no good trade in value, - what car has trade in value these days?
not willing to negotiate a deal, - there is no negotiation on smarts, prices are set by smart usa
bad interest rates - in comparison to what? credit unions and your neighborhood banker are always better
and to top it off i found out that the exact orphan/ car I have been waiting for (13 months) is on the lot. - did you expect them to match your order to their inventory of orphans, were you on an orphan list?
Except for your post, I have not seen or heard any bad comments about either Devon smart center or Devon MB.
I purchased two at Devon. Margie, Seth, Eric, and Tom are all great. Yea Devon! No deals, take it or leave it. They'll work with trades but they are no different than any other dealer in that regard.
The first smart (silver/silver) was an orphan. They called me and asked if I wanted it. Picked it up one year ago. I took it knowing I had two reservations. Picked up my first reservation in September. My second reservation is due in a couple weeks. I have my silver/silver up for sale in anticipation of the new arrival. Not being very successful in these economic times. May have to keep what I have.
~ I will cross my fingers and hope that you receive a " super wow " experience in Cherry Hill You may find the orphan that you just have to marry lol . . .
I've had no issues with Smart Center Devon either. Haven't gotten a Smart yet, but i have a Brabus on the way (possibly even an orphan, surprisingly, but i have one on reserve just in case that one get's taken). Before i knew i was getting a Brabus, i've been talking with Seth. Had two calls about different standard Smart ForTwo's, but neither of them were really what i was looking for. When i found out that i was getting a Brabus, and told him so. He said congrats and such. Just got a call today from Seth again, saying he had a black Brabus cabrio.... and i probably would have taken it, but i was looking more for the silver coupe.
They were also very welcoming when i went down back in like April or May or so of '08 to place my reservation. Showed me around some bits of the car.... took the engine cover off for me so i could take a picture of it. Offered to take a picture of me sitting in one, but i said that it wouldn't seem right when it isn't my car. Can't wait to go down again when i finally get to pick my car up.... which could either be kinda soon, since he said they might have a silver Brabus coupe available if one person doesn't take it.... or when i get the one that i reserved within the next 90 days.
I got my orphan at Devon just last week and they were VERY nice to me.
I also got my OWN financing, so I wouldn't have to deal with them and my bank takes another .24% off the rate if you have auto payments.
I did not think they would give me what I think my 2007 Outback Sport would be worth so I am selling it myself.
I didn't even TRY to make a deal. It would have been insulting. I remember when the first Saturns came out and that "No deals" was started in the auto industry.
