Yea, bad idea putting a small child (Or any living mammal/animal) in the boot area of the smart. There is no way to secure them in a crash.

Sorry. The smart would not be a practical choice. First off, baby seats are not suppose to be in the front of any vehicle. It's not against the law or anything but it's a lot safer for them to be in the middle of the back seat. And there is NO WAY all 3 of you could fit in a smart fortwo. You may want to explore other options.

Oddly enough, the smart does come with anchors for a baby seat. It would go in the passenger seat, of course... the rear is not a place for any form of passenger. The reason for the rule that you don't put a baby seat in front comes mostly from 1990s era air bags. The front air bag turns off if the passenger weight is under about 120lbs. Even so, in a 4 passenger car, the center of the rear seat has more of a "crush zone" around it and is usually safer for child seats only... an adult will fly forward where the two on the sides would be 'cushioned' by the seats in front of them.

It's still a 2 passenger car, though. Sorry, moviestar, your wife will just have to put on roller skates and lasso the smart.

All four of my kids scream to take rides in the smart car. All but the youngest, 3 years old, have taken short trips. Only the oldest does NOT require a booster seat. None are in a 5 point child restraint seat any longer. We've long thought that a 2 seater truck might be a good 1st car for our oldest son. 2 seats means no friends, if he taking his younger brother with him, in the car to distract him. Perhaps our smart will meet that need in 5 years when he's old enough to drive.

One seat, one seatbelt, one person.

I think I would treat this like I would my motorcycle. No children.

Also the forfours have been discontinued by Smart. So no help there either. The Yaris is a good second choice. Seats 5 and only a little bigger at the same price. Mini's are too expensive.

What is the weight on the seat that turns on or off the airbag? The sales person told me it was 50lbs she thought. I would be taking my 10 year old son who weighs about 70 lbs in the car with me at times. Actually come to think of it, unless I get an orphan, he will be almost 12 years old by then and heavier of course.

Which does lead me to my next question. Do people generally feel comfortable taking their kids in the car with them? I'm a stay-at-home mom. This car would strictly be for urban use and short freeway rides. I also have the big SUV when I need to chauffeur other kids. My oldest has a Honda CRV, but she will most likely have that car at college with her.
