Did the dog possibly leave an undesirable present in the back that may have rolled under the seat?

I park my smart in a metal building which gets really hot in midsummer and I have noticed a smell that is about what you're describing. I find that if I crack the windows a little it doesn't happen. If I forget, I just roll both windows down for the first few minutes on the road and it disappears. My guess is that it just the plastic gassing out.

When my car was new it cooked off some of the protective coverings that they put on. New car smell is not always pleasant in my view. It was worst at the back of the car where it gets the hottest, could your problem be something like that? Hope you find the culprit.

In the event that it may have something to do with the A/C stink. Try the following about a mile before your destination turn of the compressor.
This removes or reduces the contaminated water that collects by evaporating it and in turn it eliminates the foul odor.
This was advice from a TV program and I always try to remember to do this, never mind that I arrive sweating like a pig here in the FL sun...but it works.

Mine has a bad smell too, I just did the 10K and it still has it. It is most noticeable after sitting all night, or the first bit of air out of the A/C. Think Ill try the compressor trick.
