Before I buy a Scan Gauge...

Can anyone recommend a good old analog style tach for the smart?

I'm just about ready to buy a Scan Gauge but I'd really like to have a real tach like the good old days of sexy Stewart-Warner and Sun tachs.

I have a friend that sells a black box that converts tach inputs for miss matched motors and tachs (Currently his only black box converts the tach signals from a Ford V8 to the original Sunbeam Alpine tach for people wanting to build a Sunbeam Tiger.) but he would have to write new firmware to convert the smart info to a standard tach and I don't really want to bother him but I might if I can't find a good looking analog tack for the smart.

I have the factory tach. The ScanGauge is a good product, but its use as a tach is limited because of a slight delay in its response. It may be less than a second, but that makes it useless for a tach.

Living 4 hours from the dealer I feel more comfortable having the ScanGauge in the car. I've had the engine light come on three times since I've had the car 4,600 miles ago. With the ScanGauge I was able to view the falut code, clear the code and did not have to spend time or money going to the dealership. You can check the codes on the net or call your dealer with the code. Take care

The ScanGauge II is a very useful tool for many things, just not for a tach. As BandSofC indicated, the update time is too slow for accurate reference unless the RPMs are fairly constant.

How do you get the codes on the net?

The scanguage will tell you the code (a4532 etc)
then you do a quick search for that code on the net (Google the code the scanguage gives you and "smart")
That should tell you what the issue is?

Back to your original question....just get the pods from the dealer, tach and clock. This isn't a race car. They work just fine and don't require any odd mounting solutions.

I don't think I'll get one but it does look impressive. . . even if expensive.

once you have the scan gauge installed you will find yourself looking at more than the road. but it does teach you how to drive to max every mile out of the tank. 40, 45, mpg every tank
I love mine, and can see how when my heavy foot wife drives the hell out of the car.
She drives it like a sports car..
