Bike (Base) Rack, delayed...

I got a call from my local Smart Center today. It looks like the bike rack isn't even in production and we have no ETA on when it will be available. So our wait has gone from 2 weeks to a few months.

Don't UK or Canada dealers have it in stock?

Yes, I gave up and ordered a thule roof rack that my husband is going to modify for the back, with some eye hooks. there are posts in the mod section that give DIY directions. If you aren't handy with that sort of thing, or don't know someone that is, you are pretty much hosed at this point. I was getting tired of relying on my friend's truck whenever we went riding.

Rack

When I took delivery of my smart, the dealer told me to not bother ordering a rack, because the wait time was 'infinity'.

It hasn't been DOT approved yet... I wish they would just leave it up to the consumer on what they want to buy.

The bike rack for the 2008 Smart is not available in Canada either. Not sure about the UK. Currently trying to figure out how to make one. It would be so simple if Smart had used a standard thread for the tow hook.

The local Smart center told me that if they develop an option they would let me know. Thankfully, I didn't put any money on my bike rack when I ordered...but it was a MAJOR reason why I got the Smart.

roof rack

Which Thule rack are you using to adapt to your smart car and where is this 'mod section' you speak of? (The mention of 'eye hooks' has me puzzled.)

There's actually an upside to this; if there was a bike rack I might have to consider buying one, in which case I'd probably have to buy a bike to justify the rack. And once I had the bike, I'd have to ride it, which involves exercising. This way, I can ignore the whole thing and work my way through another bag of Oreos and a Coke.
