Am looking for some feedback from current Smart owners who have chosen black for their exterior color. How is the appearance holding up? Do they still look nice and shiny or do they have the "swirls" and "scratches" as many/most black cars do after exposed to Mother Nature for a time? The reason I ask is that I just purchased a "used" Pure (11 miles on the odo) with the intention of changing panels to white, but the black looks pretty nice at the moment. Considering buying the white panels from SmartTech while the price is lowered but won't spend the money if the black holds up well. Any opinions out there?
I purchased black/black and white/black smarts. I intended to keep one and it's the white one. The black showed too much dust and dirt even in the short time I owned it, but others may have different opinions. It probably depends on where you live, if the car is garaged at home/work, how often you want to clean it and with what, etc.
My black's holding up nicely. Remember, the panels are not painted, they are made of black plastic. Not sure how that will affect the car over the years, but so far so good. I've had it since May and I have 10000 miles on it.
I will say that like any black car, it will show the dirt after driving in the rain. You'll have to was the car more often. But the same can be said for a white car.

AFAIK, it means that the black is not painted onto the exterior of the plastic; it's actaully made of black plastic. So, if you get a scratch, it's not removing paint from the surface & exposing the original color of the metal underneath. It will still be black!
I've gotten a few chips taken out of the front panel of my black and silver smart. Because of the solid color you don't notice unless you are only a foot away... and then only barely. I've only had it for a third of a year but so far I'm happy with the way it looks.
I had a white VW before I got my black on black Passion Coupe. I seldom did anything to the VW since it didn't look much better clean than dirty. The black smart, however looks spectacular when clean and shiny. I go to "touchless" car washes and try to avoid rubbing anything but wax on the car. It certainly shows dirt and road salt, but after a quick run through the carwash it looks great. To each his own, but I'll take black over white.
I've yet to see an ALL black here in FL. It's just too much in the heat, collecting and retaining heat. I've got a red/black and the black around the top and rear get so hot you can't touch them in the summer. I just can't image having an all black~! Superb looking when all cleaned, but not practical here. One little sprinkle and it'll look crappy again. . .
I owned a black Explorer when I first moved here . . . sorry I ever did, too. It never looked good, either.
