The alternator shouldn't have any impact on your brakes whatsoever. What do you mean by stiffness? Perhaps try flushing the brake fluid?

Chilly, if you mean you stand on the brakes and little or nothing happens, get them checked!

They probably knocked the hose off the vacuum pump when dropping the engine to re&re the alternator.

Vacuum pump? The cdi has a vacuum pump that supplies negative pressure to the brake booster.

Chillyryan

I also have a /05 Smartcar and have just noticed the battery light coming on and took a reading of the battery under load and the alternator is putting the charge back into the battery. Oh Oh...alternator change coming up for my Smartie. I have 122,000 k's with no prior problems according to the record book that came with the car.

Do you mind me asking what did the dealer charge you for doing your alternator?
