Steven, sorry to derail the thread. I agree that the smart could be as big a hit as the beetle was in its day. Thats exactly why I have wanted one for years. I don't want to find out if it floats, but I do see myself having as much farfugnugen in my smart asi I had in my old beetle.

Wonderful post, Steven!

FWIW, I tried this and it did not work on my '68 Beetle. I was at a public boat ramp, and had the front wheels way in the lake. The rear tires were right at the waters edge, and the front's wouldn't lift off of the bottom.

I know that a man drave a VW across the English Channel once with a propellor on a crank extension, so there must have been other contributing factors in why mine wouldn't float.

Must have been the beer, and the fact that my convertible top was down...

^^^ True story, BTW.

Steven, for the past six months, I've been submitting a comment to news articles on the smart, where allowed. Within those comments is the feedback we've received from our customers and the tie in to the Beetle.

"Still, the owners of these cars have all shared their common feedback... there is no car, at any price, that will attract the positive attention from passers-by, than the smart car. It is not the miles/gallon. It is certainly not the (converted car's high) price. It is the unique style and design, so different from any car on the road, that makes this car magical. As magical as the only prior car in history to bring these smiles to this country... the fifties Beetle... Get ready for this phenomenon, America. When you see one in person, you'll understand. There is no way to understand it until then."

Only the French could come up with that color of red. The Germans have no sense of humor.

The Smart is a blend of many good ideas. It's the first "world" car.

Funny... I was asked if she floats the first day I drove it to work. Apparently my coworkers are concerned about my safety as I drive across Tampa Bay twice each day. I tell them: "I plan on never finding out if she floats. I keep 4 wheels on the road... well... at least 2 wheels."

Ziggy...
