buttons on key

Are those buttons on the head of the key (the ones for locking and such) a problem? do you find yourself accidentally setting off the alarm with them or anything? do they go off in your pocket?

I've been wondering this as well. Not that this key would fit in my pocket anyway...

Is there a way to detach the key from the buttons? I wonder.

I've hit the panic button a couple of times already by accident.

In a word, NO.
The buttons are part of the electronic key head and allows the car to start once it's inserted in the ignition. There is some communication between the key and the car, a trading of codes so to speak, that allow the car to start. A bare key will only unlock the drivers door - but the car can't be started without the round head.
And if you should lose both keys - be prepared to shell out big bucks to replace them. Even losing one means high costs to buy another and program it. . . not cheap either.

That's interesting. I was looking here: Evilution - Smart Car Encyclopaedia

Since that isn't the same key as ours, I didn't know if recreating that "mod" was a possibility.

Hehe! I may look into it tonight anyway, unless someone who knows more than me has a reason I shouldn't. After all, what do I know... really?

Does the key part have to be attached the way it is now, or does the fob (with buttons) just need to be in the car? I wouldn't mind having both on my keychain, just not attached to each other.

that is what I was afraid of. my old vw had a panic button that stuck out. I kept setting it off whenever I reached for my keys. luckily, theirs was removable, but with buttons right on the head like that, it seems inconvenient. I absolutely loathe alarm systems.
