Does the key part have to be attached the way it is now, or does the fob (with buttons) just need to be in the car? I wouldn't mind having both on my keychain, just not attached to each other.
Here is my thought.
Car is under warentee, Key is also.
Key problems can be expensive.
Don't mess with it because if something goes wrong they may not cover paricular future problems

Or, only do it to one key and don't take that one with you for service.

Some stories from way back last summer:
- A colleague of a smart owner told the latter that the car was acting out in the company's parking: he had the key in his pocket and was locking/unlocking his car at almost every move, through the walls.
- A father was asking lots of question about his key/fob not working anymore: his toddler had played with the buttons and went past the car-fob memory. They required a Dealer's visit for a reset/re-match.
- Someone posted about the round button on the fob getting loose and using some thin plastic/rubber material to patch it up. Those are somewhat delicate. TLC!

I've heard that a set of new keys costs $300 and is available only through a Dealership... Be careful!

Suggestion: switch key now and then, to give them both a chance to refresh their handshake with the car's ECU.

Oh my! I'm glad I work on a large enough campus where this couldn't happen to me.

This is my plan. I am one of those people who likes to take things apart as much as possible and then put them back together. My friends would not let me use anything electronic of theirs without warning me that I am not allowed to take it apart.

Here's hoping for the best...

Katey, while I was in there, I checked, and it would not be a difficult thing to shorten the alarm button so that it would need to be pressed much farther in before triggering.

Your picture isn't showing: it looks like it links to a secured mail document... Could you repost with a public link, or a link to your own Gallery? Thanks.

This makes me very happy; as you can see it makes it much less awkward to carry on this keychain I got from the dealership. Very nice. I'm pleased.

Before the car key stuck off so far that it was uncomfortable to carry around. Sorry I totally hijacked this thread.

LOL that is funny about the unlocking thing. My distance to unlock or even open up my Cabrio top is about 15ft max. Any farther and it does not a darn thing. I can't even use the remote to the bottom of the chin trick for extra distance.

I set off the alarm from inside my apartment while effing around with the key a little while ago. So I have at least 100 ft of distance locking, I guess!

One trick you can try: Open the key head (as described many places... I think the manual even shows it in how to change the fob battery) and place a slip of paper under the rubber button for the alarm. It's simple to do and prevents just that button from working.

On my fob the alarm button is recessed, so it's not easy to hit.

Nevertheless, if you unknowingly press more than a limited number of - is it 128 or 256? - times on the lock/unlock, your fob/ignition would lose track of the code...
