I am wondering what CA buyers paid for their Smartfortwo Passion. I know the invoice is $14800. The destination charge varies from $350 - 650.00; depending on LA versus San Jose location (LA is cheaper). Then, there is tax (CA) and license (DMV) fees.
Capital One Finance is telling me the most they will finance for my Smartfortwo Passion $16337.20. This is a problem, as my San Jose dealer wants $17335.00 for the car (vehicle, destination, tax, license). I start out $1000.00 in the hole before options.

Cant expect the finance companies to pay for your DMV fees, title registration, taxes and license

I do not expect the finance companies to pay said fees. It is interesting Capital Onn claims a 2008 Smartfortwo Passion should cost no more than $16337.00. No matter what the DMV fees, title registration, taxes and license total, Capital One claims the total cost of the vehicle (not options) should not exceed $16337.00. Capital One will not finance beyond $16337.00 (not a credit issue; a market value decision).

Why is that surprising. Depends on what there underwriting guidelines are. Some companies only want to finance a certain % of the car perhaps based on whatever historical data they have. When I was looking at a Gallardo 2 years back many companies would never finance over $120K. Purchase price on this particular car was $212K. It's what the bank is willing to finance. The difference you down. It's there standard of risk and return in there investment portfolio. It's not a standard from bank to bank.

I financed the complete cost of my passion plus the extended warranty, about $16,000, through smart center Tulsa at 5.5% for 48 months.
