Not disconnected but too dead to use the key fob buttons.
The connection to the lock felt distinctly mechanical.
The key will not lock the car.

So do not unlock your smart if the battery is dead, because once unlocked (mechanically) you won't be able to lock it unless you installed a new battery (or recharged the old one).

Sorry, the lighter plug power port is only active when the key is on, and maybe for a few minutes after shutoff. These things won't work in a Smart. A battery tender has to be connected directly to the battery.

Maybe you could move the lighter plug fuse connection to an 'always' on slot? Shouldn't be that difficult to do. . .

That darn car locking...

My 2 cents and someone may have said this already...
Run two wires and connect them to the original wires that go to the battery. Remove battery altogether. This cable can be made accessible from the front by going thru the firewall. We here know that the front hood can be easily opened, yet the average person wouldn't even know what to do even if they figured it out how to open it and then saw the open car.
On the two wires connect the battery temporarily to lock the car and simply remove it. (Even if a crook would connect the wires to another battery he would still be dumbfounded because the car will remain locked.) Replace hood and your in business. I suggest that it's done after hours and quickly.
The event is probably over now, but it's worth a shot in the future. Opening a smart has never been an issue.

IF they will allow you ask them if you pull the fuse that would prevent the car from starting. I showed at a Indoor carshow and they require me to disconnect the battery too. So I explained the battery is located under the floor board simular to some hybrids and they allowed me to disconnect the fuse to prevent the car from being able to be started. Fire Marshal checked it and allowed me to show my smart indoors.
