Car arrives in a few weeks... but going to Afghanistan. What do I do?

Hey everyone,

I am as excited as you all are about the smart coming to the US - so excited that I reserved on on March 24 of last year. I have been told by smart center Round Rock (Texas) that it will be here "by the end of February".
The only problem is... I have been activated to go to Afghanistan with the reserves at the end of the year. As much as I would love to have this car, it doesn't do anyone any good sitting in a garage for a year.
So I thought I would ask you all, the experts: how can I sell a reservation? I put it up on Craigslist but it was flagged for removal after a few hours. Since I don't have the car yet, I don't feel right (and probably can't) put it somewhere like autotrader.com or ebay. But if I take delivery then I am entangled with paying off a loan right after I get it.
Any ideas?

It's a convertible, red metallic / black tridion cell with black leather (comfort package)
. It's going to be $18310 when it arrives, plus taxes and all that good stuff. Thanks for your help.

If you let smart know you no longer want the car they will give you the $99 back and you won't have to worry about selling it...the dealer will do that. It will find a good home

Good luck and hope you stay safe overseas

I'm not sure, but I don't believe one can sell a reservation. If you have your dealer's info, I'd call and, sadly, create an Orphan.

Fortunately, it will go to a good home in no time.

Here's to your safe return <clink>!

Agreed. Why have it sit for a year? You can have another when you return. Please be safe, and thank you.

Best of luck smartlonghorn
Great suggestion wahi.
Another option is you get the car, enjoy it while still at homes this summer,
and then you sell it before leaving.

Come back safe

Or just keep it. That is, do you know when your tour ends?

As of right now, I'm supposed to activate from October 08 to October 09, so if I were to get it then I would be able to enjoy it for 7 months or so before I had to leave.

So here are 2 more hypotheticals:

Sell it as soon as it comes in a few weeks, or
Drive it for 6 months and then sell it

Do you think I would lose money on either of those scenarios? Or, even better, maybe make a little
It just kills me to make an 'orphan' after waiting a year to get this thing.
Thanks for all of your responses! I'll be fine over there.
