Number 3 following two hybrids - not too shabby!

A small sum of money gets you a Lilliputian car that returns the third-best fuel mileage of any vehicle here. The Smart Fortwo delivers solidly on its niche-market promise. It’s the ultimate urban vehicular solution as defined by stylish cachet, excellent fuel economy and — by virtue of being the smallest — being also the biggest gun in the parking wars. Your mileage may vary; ours did, with an average of four fewer mpg than the EPA’s combined number. Given that the Fortwo is the slowest-accelerating passenger vehicle in the country (say a Hail Mary before merging onto a freeway), a lead foot, with a resulting impact in fuel economy, is practically a safety requirement.

City: 33 mpg
Highway: 41 mpg
Combined: 36 mpg
Base Price: $12,235

I don't know about y'all but I drive in Austin, Texas CRAZY traffic and I have not had a problem with merging into traffic. I don't know what roads C&D are using but even Texas roads give you ample onramp length to accelerate to the desired speed.

They still like to play up . . .

They still like to play up the "Say a Hail Mary before merging onto a freeway" bit, don't they?
No where did they mention you could buy two smarts for what the top 2 vehicles and most of the others cost. . . and they used the very base model prices, too.
Heck, I only say a "Hail Mary" when I see a big-a** truck in my rear-view mirror. . . not every time I merge.

We were through Austin last week on I-35N and had no trouble merging with traffic - it was moving bumper-to-bumper at about 5 mph!

Austin parking lot also known as IH35

Yes, exactly. I think there are one or 2 on ramps to our connecting line (IH35) that are short jumps to traffic but MOST people avoid those once they know about 'em. Like I said I don't know where they drive but merging is no problem.

Perhaps they are not used to the automated manual transmission?

There is a tractor trailer where they have a mouth and teeth on the grill. One would probably say a 'hail mary' in any vehicle with that in ones rear view mirror.

In my book that puts Smart in first place. As has been written elsewhere hybrid ownership is so much costlier that the fuel savings may be wiped out. (insurance, repair, purchase price, battery cost etc) I'd take two Pures over a Prius any day.....
ALSO...the 'slow' thing is getting old.....it is different....but LEARN to drive it and I keep up with traffic in some of the US worst cities to drive in. Get over it media!

Perhaps we should write our own review of the Smart Fortwo and submit it to them? 'Smart Fortwo; An Owners Perspective' ? What do you think of this idea?
