Car seat?

I don't know if anyone has asked this, but I was wondering if anyone has put a carseat in the smart? I know here in North Carolina, it is legal to put a baby seat in the smart, they said it would be considered a truck at this point. We just found out my wife is pregnant and my car should be here by the end of the week. SO I am wondering if I need to prepare my self to sell it in nine months or could this actually work?

I would love to here your what other people think about this.

From what I've read there is a sensing unit in the seat that judges the weight and turns off the airbags on that side if the weight is not met. That said with a 23 month old right now I would not put my son in the smart car. You have to judge your individual situation for me the smart is going to be an additional vehicle/commuter for my wife. Given the storage (lack of room for a stroller etc, I'm not sure its the ideal vehicle for a baby. That said it can be done and its addressed on smart's website in the faq.

Check your state laws carefully. In many states it is illegal to put a child car seat in the front. As good as I feel about the safety of the smart car I won't be putting even my 6 and 7 year old Grandchildren in it at this point!

the airbags in front will stay off with a car seat installed. wish there was a switch but it does work. just make sure the lamp stays lit. there is a tether point and it works well.

In some cases I'm aware of if the vehicle doesn't have anything but a front seat the law is considered not applicable. My Titan also has a sensor in the front seat. Obviously each states law is going to be different so I'm not aware of them all so as kwagar says I'd check ur own laws to be sure.

provisions are there from the factory for a car seat. If there is a back seat that is where a baby seat should go. In the absence of a back seat most states allow you to use the front. there needs to be a way to insure the front air bag will not deploy a switch or a sensor like the smart has.
Thanks for sharing your opinion with us

Transporting child in NC is legal

As a former court official in NC, I went to the Governor's Traffic Safety Dept. and they said it is legal to transport a child in a 2 seat vehicle in the front because of the absence of a rear seat. A booster seat or baby seat should be used and the air bag turned off if there is no automatic turn off sensor. You may find this in writing if you require it at: buckleupnc.org.

Hope this makes the answers above official.
