Car Shipping from CA to TX

Hi All,
I couldn't find an answer for this in the archives...does anyone know of a good low-cost shipping company that could transport a smart from San Francisco to Austin, TX?

The GM at smart center SF got a quote of around $1500 for me from a high-end company that ships the car in covered trailers with soft tie-downs. That sounds decent to me for that kind of transport, but I'm curious if anyone here has had experience with cheaper alternatives.

Thanks in advance for any input! - Peter

Here, on the East coast, some retired people who look for cheap transportation North-South (snowbirds) are offering their services to those wealthier birdies who want their car(s) with them either in Florida or in the NE. The owners pays for the car's costs and a nominal lodging. The drivers are member of a bonded organisation...
The flip side is that most of those cars a huge cruisers, with back seats bars and lots of polyesters suits hanging... You get the picture!

You can post an ad on a college campus where the car is and students will drive it out to get home.

Call this guy: ATS Transport Broker, 1355 Heritage Way, Gilroy, CA 95020, (408) 842-5341.

He is a transport broker who has empty space on trucks throughout the U.S. He's a good guy and he helped me get one of my Limousines shipped from Florida out here to California. And that Limo was about the length of 5 or 6 smarts.

If you're not on a schedule some transport companies will do space available at a discount. I had my 66 mustang shipped that way and it was very reasonable.

I wouldn't trust a college campus ad response, but we've used Auto Driveaway and were quite pleased. The couple were from Europe and were traveling around the U.S., wherever there was a car needing to be picked up and delivered. They were having a great time on their meandering vacation. Our car arrived on time, in perfect shape. Had anything happened, Auto Driveway would have covered it all.

I paid $250 to have mine shipped from Los Angeles to Bisbee, Arizona. The whole thing was arranged by the seller, so I'm not really sure whether that was a special deal because he was a dealer. It was open transport, but the driver was great.

Thanks, Everyone. Bill Scott at smart center SF was able to get several quotes for me this week and it looks like a company called Chariot Auto Transport came in with the low bid. Really appreciate all of your input.
