So are you saying that we will get a vin number for our Smart before it ever gets to the USA?

Unknown; however the Canadians had them with their pre ordered smarts. Us early adopters may have our cars all ready on the boat, dock or dealer when we go in to sign on the dotted line.

Okay, So I was wondering why all the directions on tracking a car that we cannot tract until it gets to the dealers? If we do not know our VIN # until we take delivery then we cannot track them... Or am I missing something?

You can also track by "Customer Reference Number" (P.O. number). On the Bill of Lading, the VIN is contained in the manifest number, and the CRN is the consignee. Of course, who is the "customer" or consignee at that point? PAG?, dealer?, prospective owner?

No my AZ brother you did NOT miss a thing... exercise in futility for the next 90~120 days

BUT good info for the future IF, after the first 2 to 4 boatloads are distributed, and IF, the Dealers have some knowledge (that they will share) about YOUR VIN before it is shipped

That's pretty funny. I lived in Munich in '91-92 and took my Lotus Esprit with me. When my Esprit went back to California, it went back on the Madame Butterfly from Bremerhaven (I drove the car up from Munich and took the train back).

More smarts are coming

Mike T from the CSC forum reports that 119 more smarts are in route to Baltimore.

For the record, that will be 593 cars in the US after this shipment, of which:

Total Number of coupés = 382
Total Number of cabriolets = 211

Since the cabrios have not presold in that high of a ratio versus coupes it seems these early shipments will be comprised mainly of floor models.
