Anyone want to head to Long Beach (its on Terminal Island across from the Queen Mary) to the big huge car lot there, brave the barbed wire, barking dogs, and massive trucks to snap a shot of the cars before a burly security squad drags you down and locks you up as a terrorist suspect?

For whatever it's worth my red cabrio arrived Baltimore on 12/13/2007. It's sitting there about one month and here am I wondering when I'll see it. Info to date is that my dealer has yet to get State DMV dealer license and Penske certification. All expected within 2 weeks. Fingers are crossed.

Mine was discharged at Baltimore on 12/13/07; no idea if it's left yet but supposedly due into Louisville by the end of January. Long trip!

The Big Pile

Think about this: the car carriers (WWL and Hoegh/HUAL) are making a number of calls at Dundalk every week, and may be discharging upwards of 100 smarts at times. They will be tightly grouped in a large marshalling area ashore. Now, suppose 12 cars are loaded at the port for smart center Wherever and that dealer has 45 leads in hand with various date and time reservations. It may be that "Lead #5's" particular car is buried in the pile, while "Lead #38's" car may be out near the edge and accessible for loading. #38 will get his/her car in the first truck load while #5 may have to wait for a later load. They can't pluck #5's out of the middle of the pile with a helicopter or something just because of a lower number. Gotta' be some some flexibility.

no. once those cars are released by Smart, they are gone. there are trucks lined up to take them all away. the longer they sit in port, the longer Smart is not making $ and paying interest and port fees.

And when they get to the dealer, the #1 car is at the front and the #5 car is at the rear. Who's smart hits the pavement first? Which one gets into the pre-delivery inspection car wash first? Oh my, the permutations!
