Carrying cargo on roof?

I'm wanting to buy something thats a tad too big to carry inside the car. I need the best advice on strapping something to the roof of my car. Yea, i have the pure. I'm trying to avoid any damage.
I have a blanket and tie down straps already.
I'm needing advice by earily morning, so start cracking!

I have a roof rack for my Herb; a Smart Fortwo Pure. I used to hold flags for a parade. The Fortwo can have a roof rack but I have not used it to really carry any thing with it. I think there was weight limit for things carried on the roof. There is a light weight trailer that one could use with the Fortwo. There is a light weight trailer that attaches to the tow hooks on the back of the bumper. There is a light weight device that attaches to the tow hooks and carries things.

How heavy it is? How far you need to go? What roads?
I have used soft surf rack. Few miles, 30MPH top speed without any problem.

Its 6 foot of scaffolding. The box is roughly 32x 80. Most likely over 70lbs. And maybe 10 miles away.
My options...
I can carry some of the smaller parts in the car to reduce the over all weight.
Keep the tail gate down and the glass section up and put the whole box in the car at an angle.

That would be the best solution IMHO.

Wouldn't driving with the tail gate down cause a bunch of damage?

I do not know why it would. You might have more luck with window up/gate closed.

Let us know how it went.....
