OK, so how wide is the storage area? I've got to have room for a folding kayak and a passenger. I'm pretty sure they'll both fit, but I need to know for sure before I configure.

Thanks

Jeff

The cargo space is 39" wide, 27" tall, and 21" deep. (From a post somewhere earlier.)

The IKEA is only about 20 minutes away, so I'm tempted to wager that the 70lb bed frame won't fly out with the hatch open. I just want to see if anyone else has risked this before trying it myself.
You should be fine. I do it in my Toyota Matrix, and have seen it done in a smart before.

JPaul,

Thanks. The longer kayak bag is 53" long, 13" wide and 8" deep. The shorter bag is 34" x 19" x 11". It looks like a no-go, or at least I'll have to be a bit more creative. Perhaps a small trailer is in my future.

I have used a roof rack on my Smart Fortwo. It is in the photo I use that is with my post. I used it in a parade to hold the different flags of the US military.

Yakima racks work well and fit nicely and really expand the smart's capabilities. Search for "smart camping trip" thread to get an idea and a picture.

don't be a buncha pussies, you'll be fine with it sticking out the back for 20 miles, IKEA do such a great job of making their boxes flat as possible. If you wanna be a grandma and worry about fumes roll down the front windows a bit and you'll survive. I'd do it just to see if it can be done. Yesterday I went on a SAMS club run and you wouldn't believe the stuff I packed in my Smartie, it's funny pushing the flatbed out to the car and wondering if it will all go inside...Also, in case you are wondering I was able to fity my car in the cart rack at my local SAMS, unfortunately the door wouldn't open once I was in!

The manual does have some standard lawyer-speak about not having the rear glass/hatch open, but I've done it. I had to take an edger to the repair shop and didn't feel like taking apart the handle or driving a truck that gets only 40% of the gas mileage. If you're extra paranoid, just make sure you're getting decent air circulation (i.e., open one or both windows some).

As for measurements, you should get a minimum of 39" wide by 27" tall by 21" deep in the back (depth varies by position of the seats). I measured 56" from the front edge of the dash to the tailgate and 76" from the windshield to the tailgate (though this would be reduced depending on how tall/thick the item is). Hope this helps.
