CEL on, code P0497

Hi all,

my smartbiru threw a code this morning. It's P0497 on the Scangauge, which, according to this thread, shows the Evaporative Emissions Purge Valve went south. The smartcenter Pittsburgh is about 60 miles away, and I am wondering if it is okay to drive there for the fix. The CEL is not blinking, but my scangauge could not erase it, either.

I think this CEL code would only cause poor gas mileage if the car is driven, but I could be wrong. Any advice? Thanks!

FWIW - Everyone that I knew that had the purge valve die got better mileage.....and yes they drove it for a little while with the valve bad. Much further than 60 miles and have since put on thousands of miles after the fix with no additional problems.

No problem. The ones that went bad around here either had smart send them one from one of the dealerships or picked one up from the Mercedes dealer. Once I got time I replaced the valve for them - very easy to do so you most likely won't spend too much time at the dealer. (our closest dealer is around 200 miles in any given direction)

I, too, have had the code pop up on my SGII. I can't get rid op/f it either. The CEL comes on for a little while and then goes off. I have my second annual inspection coming up in a few weeks and I'll see what the dealer says. Car runs fine. Very strange!
