I Just got my invite to configure. #1507, reserved 2/16/08. I went through the configuator, it said I would only have the chance to change dealer once. That option never came up. I am about 50 miles from SCI (smart center Indy), but they show me going to Kentucky. Should I call them and change dealers, or will that just slow things down?
I configured a passion coupe Red/Black, comfort package, fog lights, and gauge package. I wasn't sure about the gauge package, but my wife said yes. (it's my smart, she has her mini). Does this mean I might have it before Christmas? My dde was saying February to April 2009. I'm so excited!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've never read of anyone given the chance to change dealers, and thought each dealer has an assigned territory. I would love to choose a different dealer(in California), at least until the local dealer(Towbin Hummer) has proven himself.
It's doubtful that changing Dealer could affect your delivery date. If you anticipate even a remote chance of a move until next Spring, hold on on the change, and call smartUSA to ask until when you can change. If you're sure you'll stay put, change it.
When you log in with your user ID and password you are asked for the zip code you used when you put down your deposit. After entering your zip code the next page allows you to update just about anything you initially entered. On that page to the right is the dealer information which you can change. All this takes place before you start with any of the car configuration.
When I found out that I could change dealers, it was just after I was notified that my car had been scheduled for shipping back in May. I called the main Smart 800 number and they told me that since it was already in the system for shipping, I couldn't make the change.
So if you want to make the change, I'd say make it sooner rather than later. If you can't figure out how to do it online, just call Smart and hopefully everything will work out. Good luck.
IIRC, some people were charged a 2% out of area surcharge, when they bought out of area orphans. Would this still apply for a regularly reserved car?
As the SC Las Vegas hasn't opened yet, I'm not sure they plan to charge for "doc fees" (AKA: additional dealer profits). From what I've read in these forums, the "doc fees" can range from nothing to about $700. The California dealers seem to only charge $55, so, to save a few hundred bucks, I'm more than willing to pick up my Smart Car, there.
When I configured, I was given the option to change dealers, but not all dealers were listed as an option. I am the same distance, time wise, from 2 dealers, but the one I would prefer was not a choice!
call the dealer you want to change to and they will take it from there. That is what I did
That might be the wise course. I telephone SmartUSA last Friday. I told them I wanted to change from SC Las Vegas to SC Universal City. They noted my reason (high dealer fees) and said they would get back to me with a decision. They didn't get back to me, so I called just now. The agent had no new information and said the change dealership decisions took time because both dealerships had to agree to the change. FWIW.
