Would anyone know why my 3 week old Smart has a check engine light on? It only has 1500 miles on it, 600 of that was driving it home from the dealer....
Take the battery earth lead off for 30 minutes and that will clear engine light, as car is new it may just be a glitch, if it comes back on after a few miles, you need to take car back to dealers, so they can find fault, it could be anything from a faulty spark plug to the lambda sensor on the exhaust, the winstar machine that the main dealers have, will find it.

Take it to AutoZone or another place that has a free meter you can use to get the error code from the engine. Most of them will give you an idea of what the problem is. Based on that, you can either correct it yourself, or call ahead and make sure the dealership has the parts you need before you take it in. (Like if it's the secondary air injection system, there's a part they need to order. They can order it and call you when it's in, saving you a trip to a possibly far away dealer.)
Take it to the dealer call ahead it is a bad EGR sensor it can be replaced in less than 20 minutes. Ours was done during a lunch break with no appointment by Smart Tysons Corner.
