Check Engine light: Code U0002

Has anyone had this problem. It occurred a day after picking up my smart. Car drives fine. Have to wait till next Tuesday for service appointment (seems to me there ought to be some priority for a day old new car...oh well)

Cleared the code, but it set again the next day.

According to the link: Evilution - Smart Car Encyclopaedia
Quote:
Network Generic Trouble Codes

U0001 High Speed CAN Communication Bus
U0002 High Speed CAN Communication Bus (+) Open

Now, you could call your dealer and share... Just a suggestion.

I have an obd II diagnostic code reader. Bought it at Autozone for my other car. They run any where from about $69 to many dollars depending on the capabilities. There is a connector under the dash (above about where you right ankle would be when your foot is on the gas pedal). It has a little door on it which opens from the top.

BTW, some auto stores will loan out the scan tools for use.

Good job, Dave. I always advice pple to get their own code reader. It's portable, self-powered and cheap these days.

If your budget allows, the ScanGauge II costs $159 or less and will read codes and monitor your systems while driving... fuel consumption, water temperature, a bunch of things.

ScanGaugeII - Trip Computers + Digital Gauges + Scan Tool

Save 10 bucks and get it from Amazon or Thinkgeek.com, or order direct from the maker and get the latest update.

most comunication problems are caused by low reference voltage. (weak battery) If your vehicle has the comfort package P51, take your smartie to your nearest dealer for a quick relay update.

I've had my Smart since Christmas Eve. I've got 6100 miles on it already and got the U0002 error code tonight on my way home from work. :-/

So I assume that-- since this is a low voltage issue-- that it's safe to drive the car until maintenance can be performed? I live 80 miles from the nearest Smart dealership, so I typically wait until Saturdays to get my Smart routine maintenance done (I've already been in once for a bad seat belt sensor). If I wait until next Saturday (March 21st) will my car be damaged any further?

Also, I had a small 8" neon plugged into the cigarette lighter (for floorboard lighting) that had a lose wire (it finally came loose this evening). Would this be the potential source of the problem? Or is this something else? I've removed the neon, just in case.

TIA for your advice and comments.
