cloning door lock signal.

Just got an email from a friend saying there is a new security threat going around. Seems there are devices available to thieves that intercept the door-lock signal that is sent out when you leave your car and lock the doors with the key-chain remote. The code is cloned into their device and as soon as you are out of sight, they unlock your car and steal whatever is available. Don't know if the smart system is subject to this or not, but I assume it probably is. Regardless.....be aware....most of us have another vehichle of some sort that would be susceptable, even if the smart isn't. The solution is LOCK YOUR DOORS MANUALLY if you park in a crowded area. Roadside rest stops are also high-risk spots.

I know a lot of the aftermarket alarms have rolling codes that are different every time which helps.

Yeah, Snopes pretty well sizes it up. This email has been passed around a few years and may have been based on outdated technology. The rolling code features of most cars on the road today prevent most casual interception of anything useful by the bad guys. I don't think its usefull info even if you stop at any rest area.

I went to snopes.com and was glad to find that the code-grabber thing seems to pretty much a thing of the past. Sorry to have wasted your time.

PS

You can't lock the smart "manualy"

If you do figure out a way to do this, let the rest of us know.

I was wondering when someone was going to mention that you can't lock the car manually!
