1) I have not read about any clutch replacements on the forum. Has anybody had to have a new clutch? How long did the original last?
2) Since smarts have a dry clutch, does the clutch wear when you are not moving, your foot is on the break, and the selector is in "D"?
There was a rash of clutch changes on 08's & early 09's. That was until smart figured out a software update to fix the issue. The clutch should last as long in a smart as any other vehicle. Personally, I. Just passed 102K on my smart and I'm still running the original clutch, and never had the software update.

The clutch should always be totally disengaged when your foot is pressing firm on the brake pedal... Some people will tend to ease off the brake pedal just enough at a stoplight or similar to where the clutch will start to engage or drag... The clutch is slipping at this point...
Best to keep good pressure on brake pedal until your ready to go or anticipating to go to get the brake hold feature to release.. Great for hills but not worth a crap on level ground....
CG. "Since smarts have a dry clutch, does the clutch wear when you are not moving, your foot is on the break, and the selector is in "D"?
The Clutch does not wear, as it is held disengaged by the throwout bearing running against the pressure plate spring race. However both the Bearing and the Plate springs and Race are being worn.
One click of the E-Brake handle disengages everything and is recommended for long holds at stop lights. A2Jack
"If" the clutch is fully disengaged there is no wear on anything except the throw out bearing. "If" the clutch is partially engaged there will be wear on the clutch disk, pressure plate and flywheel.
when it starts to slip.....there is no set mileage for replacing a clutch like your engine oil..how long your clutch will last depends on how you drive and how well the clutch is made.....if you do need to replace the clutch you need to make sure the flywheel gets resurfaced or replaced as well....a warped flywheel will ruin a new clutch in short order!!!!
I have an 09 Pure and mine was replaced by the dealer at 48000 miles and cost in the neighborhood of $1400.00 It started to shift hard, as if your foot slipped off a clutch pedal, but it did not slip. The pressure plate and throw out bearing were also replaced in that price.
No tougher than any FWD vehicle. After all, the setup is basically the same. MB says you need to "teach in" the drag point, but I call BS on that one. Reset it to where it was new(if you haven't made an adjustment like I did), and it should be good to go. If it doesn't feel quite right, 3 bolts, and you can make small adjustments.
