Live in Saskatchewan, and have driven the smart for 2 1/2 yrs, and only had 1 time it didn't start, It was -55 out though and had been sitting unplugged for 5 hrs. I guess you can't ask to much.

I wish it got HALF that cold here... another indication Im living in the wrong part of the world...
Well, I've noticed that on days when its warm, the engine flips on the first crank. But on colder days it takes 2 or 3 cranks. By crank I mean a cycle for the engine. You can hear it clearly when you hit the key... it goes "whir.. whir.. whirroooom!" It's the whirs I'm counting.
But I've only had it not start once, and that was when the battery was too dead to make the engine turn over. (It went whiiii whiii tick tick tick tick. Not a pretty sound.)
Hello,
its -27F in Quebec Canada and my Smart wont even turn let alone start.
if anyone has any ideas of how to give it some help. Mine is a diesel model.

When was the last time you drove it? Sound like the batt is dead. I'm sure you have a block heater so my guess is that you have a cold, dead battery. That happened to by bike in the cold and my bus both if it was cold and not driven for a few days.

You should probably "routinely" have it on a floating battery maintainer or some kind. I personally use a Battery Tender Plus.
To get it started right now, you could use a battery charger with a "starter" function. Other than that, just put a charger on it until the battery is fully charged.

Hi Chieftmc, I don't have a heater on it and I use it daily. so it sat overnight but it was -34 here last night. It doesn't seem like the battery is dead but I'll go and try to charge it. Oh dear I dread going out there in this cold. If I were a car I wouldn't start either! Can you put one of those heaters on a diesel?

I don't know about a diesel smart and how much room you have, but they are built in to busses and trucks up north (south for you) and we would end up buying busses fromm up that way that had them. Being diesel wouldn't be an issue. Kinda quick for a battery to be dead, but we don't get those temps here. Its either one or the other, or a combo of both.

There are many others. You can probably purchase one "locally". They keep the oil in the pan warm so your engine can crank over easier. Between a block heater and a battery maintainer; it "should" solve your problems OR, you could just stay home!

Bateries don't like that kind of cold, they lose power.
Fluids don't flow(oil) and diesel can Gel at those temps very easly.
Oh and was that -34 f or c not that their is much of a difference at those temps, they meet at -40
