This is true with any brand of car....if I don;t complain about a problem, are they going to go looking for things to do.....they don't. If I take my car in for service, and the brakes are squeeking and I don't complain, why spend factory money fixing it. I am sorry, but that is the policy of nearly all manufacturers now. Even if the car is under warranty and I ask for things to be fixed that does not mean that they will do it. That was one of the reasons I switched to BMW from Mercedes, but even they don;t go looking for issues to fix for no cost to me anymore.

I think it is depend on the dealer. A while back(5 years ago), I took my Nissan SUV for an oil change. A tech advisor came up to me and told me there were some thing wrong with the front strut and it needed replacement and the cost was like $300+. He told me since my SUV still under warranty, they'll take care everything without charge. The thing is my warranty was going to expire in a week or two. If they didn't tell me I will be out of $300.
That's the good old days.

My Nissan dealer in the meantime, is not impressing me as I fight with them to get things fixed beofre my 2004 Quest goes out of it's 5 year 60,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty......maybe I am just a glass half empty type of person.....

that's why I got this....I will depend on no one anymore....I'll yank my own transmissions, and fix them at home.....

Okay, so... what IS the truth here? For those of you in the U.S. who've gotten your oil changed, is it $100, or $270?

The OP mentioned that a.) he's in Canada, b.) it's an older Smart (which apparently needs a suck-job to get the oil out, LOL), and c.) it's a diesel. Are all of those the reason for the difference?

If it's $100 for a 10k oil change, that's not that bad. I take my "regular" car in for 3k oil changes at the dealership, and they alternate charging $30 (oil only) and $100 (oil and once-over and tire rotation and et cetera). Even if you just got the oil change, if you do it every 3k you're almost up at that price anyway.

Like I said, here the price for the 451 is not too much different. The Dealerships charge what they want because they know you will pay it.

I woudl love to have the time, money, and resources to do so. But I work full time, need the car running or a loaner if its not, and do not have a garage or driveway. That why my wife and I rely on warenties.

I believe that is not the point though, 1) 8,000 km = about 4800 miles whereas 10,000 miles is approximately 16000 km. I am not complaining about having to get the oil changed though..usually that is the cheapest maintenance you can give to a vehicle...the bestg bang for you buck...BUT...however you look at it ...$300 is an exorbitant amount for an oil change...not matter how many kilometres (or miles) one puts on.

If its a 450, get the teardown manual and look for wear and tear by your self and either do it yoruself or go to jiffy lube. Thats way too expensive.

Thats a car payment. no way
