Does the service also include servicing a water separation filter? If so, a filter element and disposal of contaminated diesel oil may help run up the cost. My annual change of RACOR filter elements is a US$50 hit just for the element; I do the labor and biociding, and I'm lucky that don't have to pay for oil disposal. It is almost impossible to keep condensation and "diesel bugs" out of the fuel tank, thus the pricey filter.

That the Mobil 1 ($24) and the OEM filter at $21 would total around $45....the most I've ever paid for the components to change engine oil...even on an 8 cylinder engine.

Exhorbitant prices are a relative thing, I guess, and depends on who is talking.
I am thankful that I have the ability to perform such an easy, almost mindless task (that sometimes can get you dirty enough---like when you accidently drop the filter into the full drain pan...LOL) but I know it has been done right then....no loose drain plugs, filters or the like and I don't have to "bend over" for anyone looking to justify their high shop rates by overcharging for such a simple service task that needs to be done.

I'll leave the transmission or engine changes for the dealer....maybe....

Don't forget the air filter. You will get much better mileage with a new filter.

Oil last a lot long, now!!! You don't have to change your oil as much now.
