***could this be possible!!!!*** (shifter)

ok I just found out that when I shift between [R,N,D] there is no mechanical linkage noise made, its all electronically communicating with the computer through a switch or sensor inside the shift area to produce a symbol on the dash. Only when I move it to park is when I hear something moving, like a solinoid or something to put in a locking pin of some sort.

Try it for yourself, you have to hold on to the shifter and move it slowly without making a lot of noise so you can pay attention.

And did you know that you can shift from 1s to 2nd with the car off but in key position one, foot on the break the then move it to +/-, then just shift up or down, you can take your foot off the break after you move it to +\-. You will see 1st and then 2nd on the dash. I don't know what this could be used for but I tried starting the car and it just beeps.

I know you can bump start the car, by following the steps on the evilution.co.uk site.

Now the question is could it be possible if smart made a new program that would allow for the paddle shifters to be pressed at the same time to go into neutral like the Ferrari's???

Smart should also make another shift program for it to be faster when put into +/- mode, like a "sport' mode.

just though I would share my experience.

The European shifter and 450 shifters use Hall effect sensors so yes it is all electronic. The parking pawl on the North American 451s is a direct linkage, you are correct.

No point speeding up shifting à la Ferrari so long as the low-powered engine is the only Prime Mover....plus the smart has a single clutch transaxle so quick shifts are not possible without breaking internal bits. For speed, it would be better with a BRABUS Ultimate 112, even with the slow transmission! Pulling both paddles shifters could make the horn honk

It goes into 1-2 just for what you said later, to bumpstart it. You can also hear it shift between the two...
I've bumpstarted mine just to do it.
It does go "faster" in +/- mode, since with you in control it gives the illusion of such and uses more gas just like sport mode.

Pulling both paddles should jam on the brakes as hard as possible, just like on a bicycle ;-)

@ Mike T the reason for faster shifting for me is because i am going to squeeze out every last umf of power without doing any ecu tuning and turbo. Then after that then i will do a ecu tune. Smart should make another program to allow for a "sport mode" when switched into +/-. Maybe if we all complain it could happen.

Shifters

Some forums of Europe debate about if Smart is an automatic or manual car without the 3rd pedal? Some people even doubt if they car drive smart with automatic licence!

A little info about Europe Smart:
There are two variants of the transmission exist in Smart car prodused for Europe.
The first variant is "SoftTip"
This transmission was installed on the first models of the Smart cars (I mean ForTwo only) till the 2007 year released.
Simply say, it is an automated, but manual transmission without a clutch pedal.
You need to change the gears up and down looking at your tachometr, the computer programe shows you the arrows when it is needed for you to push to change the gear the but on the braking
the car is able to change the gear down and start from the first gear.
But you still need to change gears yourself!

The second variant if "SoftTouch" it is almost the same but more developed transmission.
This transmission I think was an addition option for the old models of Smart, but I'm not sure.
This transmission is installed at the moment on all Smart cars 451 from 2007 y. released.
This transmission is still called the automated manual transmission, but it is a real robotic automatic transmission.
You have the fully automated mode of driving by pushing the button on the change gear holder.
But you still have the mode, where you can drive manually, in a "tip" mode, when system gives you notices when you must do it.

SoftTouch and SoftTip are just marketing names. The "tip" is from the original "tiptronic" designation coined by
(I think Porsche) years ago for a transmission controller that you only had to "tip" up or down to effect a shift... the same idea. And we dont have a P mode on the transmission!!!!
