SMART Safety

This is from the Euro NCAP site. Don't know how reliable but this is what they say.

"Euro NCAP provides motoring consumers with a realistic and independent assessment of the safety performance of some of the most popular cars sold in Europe.

Established in 1997 and now backed by five European Governments, the European Commission and motoring and consumer organisations in every EU country, Euro NCAP has rapidly become a catalyst for encouraging significant safety improvements to new car design.

We hope that when buying a new car EuroNCAP.com will help to give you the information you need to choose safety"

With that said they have the following test results listed on the site regarding safety for adult passengers and for pedestrians (hit by the tested car):

2007 Smart fourtwo Passengers 4 Stars Pedestrians 2 Stars
2007 BMW Mini Passengers 5 Stars Pedestrians 2 Stars
2007 Volvo C30 Passengers 5 Stars Pedestrians 1 Star
2007 Chevrolet Aveo Passengers 2 Stars Pedestrians 3 Stars
2007 Dodge Caliber Passengers 4 Stars Pedestrians 2 Stars
2007 Honda Civic Passengers 4 Stars Pedestrians 3 Stars
2007 Toyota Corolla Passengers 5 Stars Pedestrians 3 Stars

One thing worth pointing out about these results is that the smart in the Euro NCAP test did not have side airbags (since they are not standard in European markets).

Buried in that report is a comment about increased risk of knee injuries, which I think explains why the US spec cars have the extra knee bolster padding.

Maybe better to compare Euro NCAP's data on the earlier 450 City Coupe with the '07 fortwo (they are both listed). The new dash is not just a U.S. feature, it is common to the UK/Continental 451s.

Also remember that the US crash tests cars at 35 MPH. The Euro NCAP is at 40 MPH I believe.
