Who says we are not SMART.We saw this comming last year. I got laughed at then and was asked when I was going to get my toy. Now i'm being asked how hard is it to get one.
... In 5 years when the energy crisis calms down, you can probably sell it...
Oh, it won't be THAT long... When is the general election anyway? November right?
Seriously though, I had a belligerent ask me "what makes YOU so special?" after I told him how long the wait could be. I said "I'm not sure but I think I have an the extra chromosome." The sad part about that was that I had thought of that comeback about ten years ago and have been waiting to unleash it ever since but the guy who triggered it just looked at me and said "What?" So I said "OK, look..." which is what I always say when I fear I am about to bury somebody in an extended run-on sentence which is spooling up in my head and I know I'm not going to be able to edit the whole thing before it starts streaming out of the big yappy hole in my face.
It came out kind of like "OK, look, there is this online registration program that you can sign up for but in my opinion it's a frustrating waist of time and it cost a hundred dollars which you can get back anytime you want or apply to the purchase of the car when it gets here but at this point they have such a backlog that you'd be lucky to get one by 2015 at which point a hundred bucks will probably get you a good pizza so why don't you just go over to the dealership on I-10 and tell one of the salesmen that you'd like to have one which is in fact what seems to have, in your words, made so "special" enough to get one of these cars before people on the so-called waiting list." He was blinking furiously trying to keep up but when I finished he asked "I-10?" so I asked "can I borrow your phone?" He gave it to me I called the smart dealership and said "Hi , I got a guy here needs to get on the orphan list so just talk to him ok? " and handed the guy his phone back. He smiled and said thanks in an overly gratefull way that would lead a casual observer to think I had just pulled a scorpion off the guys neck so I said "Hey man, I'd do the same for a friend" and drove off.

I was surprised yesterday to see a brand new over-blinged Esaclade with temp tags on it.
It was the not-very-useful-imho half-assed pick-up kind.
I hope he got a sweet deal on it cause... well... gas is kinda pricey if you havent heard...
LIke I have mentioned here before, I avoid eye contact with people (not purposely, that is just my nature) and when they do address me directly I answer briefly and continue on my way without stopping to further engage the conversation.
Our Dear Leader would rather go the the King of Saudi Arabia on his knees to beg for lower fuel prices, like he did last month, than ask his citizens to drive slower or force the car makers to improve efficiency.
I don't see ANYONE, at any level, in any party doing anything......Spread the blame a little more evenly.
Sad when driving a Smart is doing more than anyone in gov't.
You must be too near the smokin' chili peppers . . .

How much have you seen gas prices decline in the past 5 years? In the past 10 years? <rant> Oh, yeah - they might come down a few cents, even twenty-five cents; but they always go right back up again. Some crisis somewhere will be the excuse. Hurricane Katrina - our offshore wells and onshore refineries are damaged, so sorry gas had to go up a buck! It's never ending. And it IS supply and demand, not Bush, not the Republicans, not the Democrats, not Congress - just plain old supply and demand. They've got and we want. . . </rant>
Aren't you glad you're smart?

I have my issues with that display as well, but if you really do own the two cars in your sig (fancy VW and a SL600) aren't you part of this problem? If consumers insistist on a certain type of car the makers will make it, end of story. Keep buying gas guzzling cars and that's what they will make. The govt can't do anything about it, the consumer can, and that's the way it should be.
I went out for a drive today in my freshly washed smart, just to enjoy the beautiful weather. A lot of other people were doing the same, and as I cruised by the lake and along the back roads, I passed (and I counted) four freshly washed Hummers. I stopped at a grocery store on the way home to get some food to cook out tonight, and another Hummer parked directly across from me. It boggles my mind.
To your original post, Springerling, I picked up my smart this past Tuesday. I stopped at a McDonalds on the long drive home to get some coffee, and a guy walked out and up to me to say, in a gruff voice, "You know, with a wheelbase that short, I wouldn't drive that over 70." This was the very first thing anyone said to me about my car! I politely smiled and said, "Thank you, sir, I was just about to ask how you thought it would do at high speeds," and walked inside. Some people just have to poke their nose into your business.
I much prefer the looky-loos and creative folks. Most people love the car. One man at the grocery store today just kept laughing happily as he walked around it and then got into his Suburban.
Just came back from the local Autozone, where they carry yet another oil filter for your smart, the Bosch 3300. Pulled up in front of the store and by the time I was inside all the staff, including the manager, were at the window with big smiles on their faces. Lots of the usual questions and even an offer to let me drive it inside the store and park. By the time I bought the filter and got back to the car it was surrounded by more people all asking the usual questions, again with big smiles on their faces. Some days are better than others.
All of the sudden Honda CRV's are getting 50 mpg....or is it the owner just trying to make themselves feel better? After I give out my mpg I am finding whatever they are driving NOW gets better than my Smart.....at least we Smart owners have helped raise the national mpg average!!!
I have been noticing the very same thing. All of a sudden the cars that with better than average fuel economy like the Civics and the like car getting 25% better fuel economy! A guy just the other day, when he asked me what kind of mileage I got and I replied "combined about 40", he said "is that all??" I promptly told him that I had come from my previous car of 16 mpg so a 250% increase in gas mileage was *OK with ME*!!!! That's when he came out with the "hell, i get 40 combined with my 95 Civic! Yeah.....right. End of conversation. I promptly bid him a nice weekend, got in my smartie and left.
So, that kind of brainless banter is beginning to surface. Everyone is getting better mileage with their cars all of a sudden.....
John
((Donald)) That means a lot, coming from a class act like yourself. I had a good snicker when I read your interview and saw your background, btw.
You all are a riot.
Standing invitation, any time one of you all are in Atlanta, look us up. There'll be fried chicken, warm cornbread, and a chocolate cake waiting on the table for you.
