So, that kind of brainless banter is beginning to surface. Everyone is getting better mileage with their cars all of a sudden.....
John
Yeah, I've noticed that too. I tell them mileage in the 40s, and they say they get in the 40s, then they get into their Suburban or Passat. Strange... I wonder what it is that makes someone want to invent their own mileage... It's not like I'm bragging about my car. That's why I bought it! (Well, partly...) And they asked, I didn't offer. I guess there's so many bad feelings in mileage right now, they want to make themselves feel better.
This will all pass.
Smarts Cars come and go where I live. Nobody pays that much attention anymore.
Just like when the new VW bug came out and the PT cruiser.
Just another little car up here now. Which is good.
Yikes.... Not a friendly way to "talk" to strangers...
I had my encounters too... Especially that man that gave me the death look while saying, " you know, I could put this car on mt flat bed and have your car going missing ". That gave me the creeps.
To all current smart owners. Aren't you glad you took a flyer on this car a year ago when you made your reservation? Don't you feel smart today?
It's like buying a stock a year ago at $1 and seeing it priced at $10 or more today. I love it when people driving other less fuel efficient brands give you the thumbs up, too. A guy in a PT Cruiser did that to me just yesterday...made me feel pretty good as his car appeared to be pretty new as well but obviously not in the same league gas mileage wise.
Cheapest discount regular unleaded is now at $4.19. I get lots of thumbs up. One guy followed me into a deli the other day at lunch time and wanted to ask where he could get one. Smart should give all of us a pack of media kits to hand out.
Funny ** we must be traveling in very different circles. I've only gotten good responses from other drivers (thumbs up, etc) and people who chat me up when I park. No one has bragged about their own mileage (tho a few ppl have assumed it'd run on batteries or would get EVEN better than 50 mpg.
I have had two ppl tell me that they thought the car was overpriced, but one was obviously a bit of a nutter and the other was a cab driver who was teasing me a bit.
btw, as my handle suggests, I DO ride a unicycle when I'm not in the car, and that gets just as many stares and comments as the Smart Car. I'm used to it by now (I've been uni'ing for 28 years), but it is odd when ppl talk about you (or your stuff) as tho you're not there or as if they have a right to do so. When I started unicycling, it was rare for me to hear comments on the sidewalks of NYC, but these days, I'll often hear parents in a loud voice tell their kids, "Look, guys, a man on a unicycle." That's not insulting, of course, but it's strange when you consider that ppl don't treat ANYONE else like that. Can you imagine parents loudly pointing out a wheelchair-rider or even someone wearing a yellow dress? It just doesn't happen (tho it might if the person in a yellow dress was riding a Segway). I think there has been a general decorum decline in the past few decades, and Smarties are feeling just as I do when I ride around town. You'll get used to it. Let's just hope it's mostly positive.
