Naah. It's not 'done' until you get the car confiscated and spend a few years in jail for altering a VIN. THEN it's done.

Meat.

Agreed, 150%. Personally wouldn't pay over $20K for it.

Question though...if the Ariel Atom can be registered, why can the Crossblade?

Don't have an answer (sorry), but a good point and another reason why a drew a comparison between the two. If I could add a question as well to keep this thread going (I really love this design) - why would a crossblade be so expensive if it actually has a lot less material on it? It really seems like our current car with modified panels and a smaller windshield.

Crossblade will not pass federal regs in place for the year it was manufactured. The Atom will. The only way I'd know to register it would be to have it federalized, or convince an inspector that it is a self assembled vehicle. Not likely with an existing VIN. How much is a car that can't be registered in the US worth? Whatever someone will pay.

The Atom can't necessarily be registered - that's still up in the air in many states. In California, it's supposed to have a DOT-approved windscreen, 6 sq.in. worth of brake light on each side, reverse lights that can allow you to see 100' behind you, a center-mounted rearview mirror and windshield wipers (they don't necessarily have to work ... I don't know why). And, when you take the car down to register it, the CHP, BAR or the B&L guy can fail you for any of those things.

That being said, the reason the Ariel Atom can be registered is because it's a kit car, not a manufactured car. Some guy built it in his garage.

Now ... if there were a mod kit for a Smart to make it look like a CrossBlade ... that'd be legal.

Atom = kit car.
CrossBlade = production vehicle.

Meat.

Seriously? I personally can live with the windshield, but think the open roof and door design are what really make the difference. Thanks for the info on the Atom, I thought it was automatically street legal in all states.

It can be done as a kit without too much trouble. I don't think I'd drive it around in L.A. in traffic without wearing a helmet, though.

Not as far as I know. Plus, as you're in California just like me know this: only 500 SPCN vehicles can be registered per year, those 500 spaces are filled within the first few hours the DMV is open the day after New Years. I've registered many a Cobra through that system.

Your pal,
Meat.
