The Atom can't
necessarily be registered - that's still up in the air in many states. In California, it's supposed to have a DOT-approved windscreen, 6 sq.in. worth of brake light on each side, reverse lights that can allow you to see 100' behind you, a center-mounted rearview mirror and windshield wipers (they don't necessarily have to work ... I don't know why). And, when you take the car down to register it, the CHP, BAR or the B&L guy can fail you for any of those things.
That being said, the reason the Ariel Atom can be registered is because it's a kit car, not a manufactured car. Some guy built it in his garage.
Now ... if there were a mod kit for a Smart to make it look like a CrossBlade ... that'd be legal.
Atom = kit car.
CrossBlade = production vehicle.
