that damn purge valve

My Bambina spent the first night alone,at the dealer. They have tried to rectify the tapping noise, somewhat better, evidently they soundproofed something. I waited over 3 hours and had to leave the car overnight, but i must say they provided a loaner, washed my Smart and were overall quite helpfull. I am wondering how many people are having this issue????

A lot. I would be interested to know what was the cure.

Well, it's a little hard to tell from your brief post. If you could describe your problem a lot more, and include any details you can, we'd all be grateful.

Seems there are many owners having a popping/knocking/tapping noise coming from the engine compartment. I have a noise that one owner described as a tat tat tat tat. I describe it more of a hard popping noise like pock pock pock pock. It happens after the engine warms (slightly, now). It doesn't follow engine rpms, happens after braking and it quite loud sometimes when stopped. I'm getting the noise just about every time I stop now. Sometimes it stays relatively quiet and is continuous. Sometimes it's quite loud and goes away completely. Then sometimes it comes back again at the same stop.

I'd hate to hear that all they are doing is insulating the noise, not repairing or replacing the pump.... if in deed that IS the problem part.

All I know is that my car is quite noisy when I stop, and I don't like it. Car seems to run fine, so I'm not anxious to waste a day or more going to my not so local dealer to have them troubleshoot a problem they perhaps haven't seen before.

EDIT: Stopping/braking isn't necessary to GET the noise, just to hear it. I can hear it as I'm driving under quiet conditions. Just didn't want anyone to think this noise is anyway related to braking, it's not. Seems completely independent from everything.

What's the service order report say? It might describe in more detail what the problem and fix is...

Run Out?

I am noticing the engine getting noisier the more we drive it. Now 8,200 0n the ode.

What I am hearing is a mix of mechanical sounds, like driving a very old, loose engine.

At medium rpms through the gears. and idling at stop lights the car sounds like an old run out, and not the new car that it still, hopefully, is.

A2Jack.

Time for valve adjustment?
I think the gas Smarts are a bucket and shim design which may require removal of the camshaft.
But 8200 is kind of young for this.

Valve adjustment? Please don't tell me the Mitsu engine doesn't use hydraulic lifters.

Someone correct me if I am wrong but I'm pretty sure the Mitsubishi engine is a bucket and shim design.
Not a big deal. Millions of motorcycles have been this way since the early 80's.

No correction needed. You are correct, bucket and shim! Not hard, just a PITA!

Then I am also going to assume that the cam will have to be removed.
And since it probably comes out from the drive side the motor wil have to be removed.
Unless the camshaft comes out from the top? But I can't imagine there would be enough room to actually measure clearance and replace shims with the motor in the car.
