I think the gas Smarts are a bucket and shim design which may require removal of the camshaft.
But 8200 is kind of young for this.
Sask. Thats what I was thinking too. Fred and I exchanged some posts "way back when" on this subject and what it would entail to do the job. It sounded grim to me.

Would a compression check by the dealer confirm this problem or are they just loose, but sealing.

We will have it in for the 10k service next week and I'll post what the dealer says in the maintenance forum.

Unfortunately, the only way I know of inspecting clearance is by way of go-no-go or feeler gauge.
But still, this motor is very young for this. Even my other ZX-11 didn't require shims until it had over 30 000kms. And then only two of 16 needed adjustment.

You have described it perfectly, I was told that it's a problem that also exists in a lot on MB's but is not that noticeable because they are much bigger cars.Someone at the dealer did mention the possibility of a future recall, if and when they re-design ...for now i was told to just try to get used to it which i am trying to do!

Glad you're trying to assimilate. Personally I think the entire pump (if that's what it is) should be replaced. Why are some cars having the problem and many/most are not. Sounds like a QC issue at least. And as I've already complained on other threads already, the last thing I want to hear from a dealership is "DEAL WITH IT" (more or less).

Well, mine was bad at making the tat-tat-tat noise when I first bought the car, but now it has subsided to just barely noticeable to not noticeable. I now have 10k miles on mine. I don't know if the additional mileage has changed it or not. Only that mine has pretty much quieten down.

Or maybe it determined that I was not going to fix it and it fixed itself.

I've had that sound as well, sort of a pop/tap sound I notice when idling at a light, after about 10 minutes of driving (after a 4+ rest period). It's not always there, but about half the time. Is that the nature of the engine?

Most of my trips nowadays are 4 miles covered in 10-15 minutes, avg speed per Scangauge is 15-22mph because of stoplights. The hottest my engine got was on my trip home from picking it up. The pop/tap noise was present on day one, so I chalked it up to it being a 3 cylinder engine or having some strange emissions design.
