SmartUSA's phone people weren't, as expected, terribly helpful. It took a bit of explaining that I wasn't talking about delivering the car, but actually configuring it. But once we had that, they were able to confirm that the configuration email hadn't gone out yet - but couldn't say when it would.
Has anyone ever had an email from smart that woudn't make a politician proud? They can use more words without actually saying anything than any candidate on the campaign trail to date. It sort of makes you wonder if the whole when am I going to get my car mystique isn't part of the smart image.
Weird....my DDE says the same dates as yours, Oct. 08- Dec 08, but I configured in May 2008.

I assume I'll be getting a phone call next, to tell me it's being made/shipped? And when do you get a VIN number so you can track its progress across the ocean... do you get that with the phone call, or do you have to go into your local dealership at that point (and, oh, I don't know... pay for the car, perhaps)?

When you get THE phone call, ask your salesperson to give you the VIN (available to the Dealer on line in the "R11", with the actual manufacturing date, the [estimated?] time of shipment and delivery).
I paid at delivery, within the hour of leaving the Dealership with the car.
I called Chandler today, and asked if they could tell me if my smart was going to be an 08 or 09. I wasn't sure they could help me with that, but they said that since I had configured already, mine would be an 08, and if I had not configured it yet, it would be an 09. They also said they did their model years by calendar years, so who knows.
My DDE still says Oct-Dec 2008, hasn't moved in a long time now.....this is the longest part of the wait...but I would rather wait longer if I could have a 2009.
