Dealer antics

I'm happy to say that there was a misunderstanding, which I explain in a later post. The windows were never etched. I called the manager at the seattle smart center and everything was easily resolved. I actually picked up the car last night....and what else is there to say except... CUTE

I've left the original post italicized for context...

I had an unfortunate experience at Seattle's smart center last night. They pushed hard for some sort of $750 chip-resistant Scotchgard coating for the front of the car. The panels are PLASTIC... They only offered the most expensive extended warranty, not even mentioning the other levels.

But the worst is that they've Already etched Vin numbers on the windows and charging $400, which of course, I did not order. So I'm now in a position of taking it or leaving it. I'm Very disappointed.

Any other experiences like this?

I vote you leave it. smarts are great cars but if everybody puts up with this crap these troglodytes will breed.

That's terrible. I guess they figure if you won't pay for it then someone else will. I wonder if you can fight this after you purchase the car, after all it's not what you ordered, nor did you give them the authority to do so. Doesn't Smart give you a copy of your actual order? I think these dealers that do things like this are asking for trouble. I wonder if anyone has tried to bring any of the dealers doing things like this to court?

Yeah, I agree. I wont pay the $400. Frankly, I feel like they ought to give me a discount for molesting its pristine windows.

window etching is one of the oldest dealer scams going. i suggest you contact smart USA immediately before you take delivery and have them deal with it. DO NOT accept the car with anything you did not order. they can not force you to pay for something you did not request.

Then what do you do when they turn around and sell it from under you? It's like your stuck. All I know is when it's my turn in line and I get a dealer assigned I'm going to tell them straight up don't touch the car, (who knows if that will help). Seems like there is a fair amount of this going on. It sucks either way, but at least if you didn't order the car I could understand it a little better even though it in most cases is still a rip off.

They cant put the car up for sale if the original recepient has not accepted or declined the car. Or so what would seem logical.
