Dealer Installed Options

My smart center said that they thought that they would get some cars on Monday. Being that I didn't have anything else to do today, I drove over there to look around, and saw that they had a car in the showroom, and one out in the front parking area.

I looked around back, and saw that there were probably 10 more cars parked out there. I had ordered a blue / silver with black leather interior and all options. I saw a blue / silver / black car, but it did not have the fog lights or the tach / clock on the dash. I looked over the other cars, and none of them had the fog lights or gauges either.

Are these dealer installed options, or are they put on at the factory? I hope that's my car out back!

TexasEx, remember that you're not the only one who may have ordered a blue/silver/black car! My dealer has two smarts in the colors I ordered, neither of them mine. Your smart was (or will be) manufactured with all the options you specified. Sorry, but it's unlikely that the car out back is yours. Patience! It's started. They're coming, and sooner rather than later. Your dealer will call you within 24 hours of your car's arrival! (Perhaps not including Sunday.)

My reservation # is 1174 (3/20/07), and when I stopped by the other day, they had a list of reservation holders, and I was #8 on that list. They told me that my car arrived in Jacksonville Florida on Wednesday the 16th. On the 14th, I got an e-mail that said I would receive the car in One to Three weeks. It could be later, but in most of the posts with pictures I have looked at, it seems as though most of these cars were ordered fully optioned as the options were pretty cheap - such as the guages for $120 and the fog lights for $110. I thought it was a little strange that out of the 12 cars or so I saw sitting either in the showroom or out back, none of them had the guages or the lights. I think the cars came in late Saturday, and they have not had time to install the options.

Tex, let me say it again. Your car was built to your specs! Cars that come in without fog lights and the instrument package were ordered that way. My dealer has more than twenty cars out back, some with those options and some without. The cars with those options have them listed on the widnow stickers. Those without do not.
Because your name appears as number eight on the list does not necessarily mean you car will be the eighth car delivered by your dealer. It does mean you car will be delivered soon, though. Your dealer has to meet certain smartUSA-set standards, one of which is that they must strive to inform the customer within 24 hours of receiving a car. Relax. You wait will now be a very short one!

I was there on Friday and the one you saw out front (silver/silver/leather) has the fog lights and the gauge. That's their demo car.

If all the smarts are like the ones here at the San Jose dealer you can look at the little sticker placed in the upper left corner of the windshield (that's the driver's side) - the last line on that sticker shows the owner's name. Here in San Jose, there are cars with names attached, a couple labeled as "Display" and about 6 marked as "Demonstrator".

Mine came off the boat just as ordered, everything but fog lights.
