I'm not taking their side by any means (based on what you told us, they were DEFINITELY IN THE WRONG), but with the economy the way it is right now and car sales still sluggish to say the least, I'm sure they would jump at the chance to have a 'done deal' on a car in their inventory. If they did contact you and you didn't happen to respond in their alloted time frame, then the car is sold. I know, this sort of happened to me, but at least it was with my permission.
I was told that there was a car available IMMEDIATELY like the one I had on order and they wanted to know if I were interested. I was on my way into work on a Saturday and I told them "Sure, I'm on my way NOW" and I turned around and headed the opposite direction.
BUT by the time I got to my smart center, the 'brand manager' took me aside and told me 'we have someone else interested in your car now and they were here on the lot, so we told them THEY could have it if you 'didn't mind'. HELL YES I minded, but I was a nice guy and said "go ahead", since I really wasn't prepared to buy one THAT DAY.
As it turned out, the other couple bought a Cabriolet and I got the one I wanted anyway, but at least they asked before they offered to sell it.
Hope it all works out for YOU TOO!
