With all due respect, I believe this is an example of personification and hyperbole and in my opinion was used correctly. Taking a pristine new vehicle and breaking its protection from the outside world and ripping out a part of it without any regard to it sounds like the "rape" equilvalent of what a car could go through. It will never be the same. If they destroyed the engine then I suspect the word "Murdered" could be used instead.
If any uses of that word to describe anything not specific to the human tradgedy of its original definition are considered offensive, then you may also be offended by movie titles such as "The Rape of Europa" which described destroying much of Europes art and culture during WWII.
We could start an entire other discussion on how often people personify their cars and call them things like "their baby".
