Now, before I do any out-of-the-ordinary traveling I call my card companies and inform them of my expected itineraries. No problems then.

I guess my longest single haul was a daylight run from Elko, NV, over the Sierras, to North Highlands, CA back in the wee-‘60s. 400 miles in just over 5 hours. A 500cc Norton Manx M30. Just finding gas along the way was the problem, not AMEX (that then didn't exist as far as I was concerned), despite the immense size of a Manx fuel tank. Ahh, the days!

The 43 mpg fits right in with the figures posted in the L.A. Time article.

If the analysis has any validity (big if), then the 43 mpg would be an estimate of the EPA combined mileage, not highway mileage as quoted on the LA Times video.

43 mpg combined would equate to something like 39 city / 47 highway.

It sounds like none of you have joined the Iron But Association

The Manx Nortons were quite comfortable for racing bikes (the "Featherbed" frame), being optimized for the Isle of Man TT. However, as 350cc (M40) and 500cc (M30) singles, there was a LOT of vibration through the bars to contend with. I became quite alarmed after the 3rd hour when I couldn't feel my right hand any more, but I had to press-on and get the bike off the road before dark. I'm guessing that the Manx was only getting about 20 MPG on street gas at full cry.
