Paid about $21K OTD for my orphan cabrio, window sticker was about $18K and that included the 4 yr tire/wheel plan and 2 yr extended warranty. I was lucky and caught them before they "enhanced" it but they typically take orphans and put $1,600 black painted wheels, $4,000 paint jobs, $2,500 nav systems, $1,200 leather seats. Are these high profit items, absolutely, can you get them cheaper elsewhere, absolutely, but is it a rip-off, not really, if they can sell you a car with these extras, why not. They do it at just about every dealer, even the MB dealer has cars with $5K worth of wheels/rubber you know you can get for half that price but some people go that looks cool, I'll take it, some are cheap like me and know what the stuff is worth and pass.
Look at it this way, if you went on ebay and paid $3k over for a used Smart with 1-5K miles on it, or you can get a brand new one from the dealer with $3k worth of overpriced extras, which would you take? It's the penalty for having zero patience to wait 18 months like me.
Definately not in Arizona...and I cannot find any state in the United States that offers that. How could they...they sell you a new car...you return to them a used car three days later....why rent? Just buy and return. I don't think that is true anywhere.
Check to see if they painted the tip of the front and rear bumpers. They are normally charcoal grey, but a lot of dealers paint them to match the rest of the body. But, yes, obviouslly you will ultimately have to ask the dealer what all the charges are for. Not that it will make a difference...they can charge whatever they want and you either buy it or someone else will. I was lucky that my dealer only added the Kenwood 5120 unit with BT, but they charged $2800 for that alone. Then they talked me into the smart warranty and tire/wheel warranty. But I think these are items I will be really happy with and use, unlike something like painted wheels that I wouldn't want in the first place. So I'm happy with my decision. I, too, waited only about a month since getting on here and looking into these cool cars.

Texas has one. In fact, I think its 30 days. But the 30 days comes with a fee. 3 days free.
It really doesn't matter now if you got overcharged, because you've technically bought it. If you signed papers, it's yours even if it's on the lot. You paid about 4k over what I did, but I didn't get Lojack, paint protection for the unpainted black plastic panels, or tire warranty. I didn't pay a destination fee or 500 bucks for paint. But then again, I did wait 13 months and during that time spent about $200/mo extra on gas with my 10mpg car. So, $2600 went to the gas station, and if I had to do it over again I'd be willing to pay that much to the dealer instead. At least you get to keep something out of the deal. In 6 months to a year, this benefit will be minimized as I expect production to increase and demand to taper off, as to most people this is a fad car. Which is fine, because that leaves the hardcore fans first in line.
Never second guess yourself after buying a car... you'll just frustrate yourself and kick yourself every time you hit a bump or have to "wait" for it to shift. (Refer to the hundred transmission/shifting threads, I won't detail it here.) Don't nitpick over mileage or one thing or another... you made a major purchase, now focus on the positive aspects like how you've doubled or tripled your mileage. With 3-4 years of gas savings, that four grand won't seem like so much.

it would be if he were here in Indiana. if you will read his post again, "sillyrabbi" hadn't taken delivery yet. according to his post, the dealer STILL HAD THE CAR....he never took it home. i agree, "IF" he had taken delivery and driven the car home, he would be SOL but such was not the case. at least when this thread was started.......
here in Indiana, one can 'back out' of a contract within 3 days of the date it was signed. if "sillyrabbi" lived here in Indiana AND had taken the car home, he could still 'back out' but as you said, the dealer would more than likely charge him for any mileage, wear and tear, etc, during that 3 day period. if he didn't pay, off to court they would go. BUT since he NEVER TOOK THE CAR OFF THEIR LOT, i see no reason why they wouldn't take it back just to keep in his good graces when HIS smart comes in.
